In Conversation with the Founder of Blossom Essentials

Ever wanted to learn more about how Blossom Essentials came to be? Today, we're asking our founder, Sarah Vilenskiy, all about the motives and magic behind this beloved skincare company!

What inspired you to create Blossom Essentials?

Blossom was developed out of a personal need for products that actually work long-term for my skin. I suffer from extreme skin dryness, to the point where it often burns. I searched everywhere for products that would relieve my symptoms for longer than just a few hours, but I just couldn’t find any. It was super frustrating - and I knew I wasn’t the only one who felt this way! So I sought out to create my own products that would help people with chronic dry skin and I knew an important part of that was using natural, hydrating ingredients.

Why was it important for you to use natural ingredients in your products?

On top of having chronic dryness, my skin is also quite sensitive. When allergy levels are high, I can break out from almost anything. Having gentle and clean ingredients that won’t react with my skin is critical for me, so I know others are in the same boat.

How much does science play into the development of your products?

Science is a huge part of our products! All our products are made from scratch with our world-class chemist who has been formulating cosmetic and skincare products for over 30 years. Every product is actually a formula, so it’s not as simple as just saying, “Here, I want all of these ingredients without these other ones, and voila!” It’s a chemistry project and ingredients can react either poorly or super well with each other, so it takes a lot of time and curation before you find the perfect blend.

We also use scientific research to incorporate new, breakthrough ingredients in our products. Lilium, our skin hydration supplement, uses an ingredient called Curcumin BioBDMC™30 which has been shown to aid with inflammation in many autoimmune diseases. So when we can successfully incorporate ingredients like that I think it makes our products that much more unique and effective!

What do you think are the biggest challenges in creating natural skincare products?

Many natural products just don’t work and it can be so difficult to stabilize the ingredients the way you need to. So we always need to be careful with how we handle our formulas, as well as the outside variables like weather and even jar type!

Do you have any personal favorites among your products?

This is such a tough one, because I create them myself and put so much time and love into each one. But, of course, I am so proud of our Honeybutter, which has allowed us to grow and expand our natural hydration products line. And I also love our Dandy body wash! It’s so gentle and soothing on my skin, I even use it as a face cleanser now too.

What are some of the things that you take into consideration when creating new products?

The efficacy of a product is a big one. You have to ask yourself, “Can I make the formula I want, without compromising on the quality of the ingredients?”

We also always want to consider the kinds of products our Blossom family would want to see! We love running surveys to find out what you guys want next. Feedback and input really help guide our decision-making process. And last of all, I think about what kinds of products I would need, as someone with chronic dry skin.

Are there any new products we can look forward to seeing?

Yes! We are so excited to be releasing a new shampoo and conditioner called Emmy and Evie! We worked on this project for a full 8 months, and are so happy with the results we are seeing! Make sure to check them out on our website starting next week!

Where do you hope your brand will be in 10 years?

We hope we will become the staple hydration skincare line that everyone thinks of when they think of dry, irritated skin!

Is there any beauty or wellness advice that you want to share with readers?

Simplicity is key! We are big believers in not needing a 12-step morning and night routine to get the results you’re looking for. Keep the products and ingredients simple and clean, and you’ll be surprised just how great your skin will react!
