The Problem with Plant-Based Collagen

The Problem with Plant-Based Collagen

What is Collagen?

It’s no secret in skincare that collagen supplements can have amazing benefits for the skin. Collagen is an essential protein in the human body. It makes up our bodies’ connective tissues, providing strength and structure to our bones, muscles, tendons, and skin.

As we age, our bodies gradually produce less collagen. This reduction leads to visible signs of aging for our skin, like wrinkles and sagging, along with other internal issues like prolonged wound healing.

The Benefits of Collagen for Your Skin

Over the past decade, animal-sourced collagen supplements have grown popular for their skin and overall health benefits.

Collagen supplements can strengthen skin, promote elasticity, and enhance hydration. Particularly as you age, collagen supplements can help to replenish your body’s depleting collagen levels, which can help to prevent the formation of wrinkles.

In fact, a review of 11 collagen-centered studies determined that taking 3–10 grams of collagen per day for an average of 69 days led to improvements in participants’ skin elasticity and hydration.

What’s more, collagen supplements can help to encourage the production of other proteins like elastin and fibrillin, which are also important to the structure of your skin.

The Problem With Plant-Based Collagen

With all the hype surrounding collagen, it's no surprise that vegan and beauty-conscious folks want to experience the benefits for themselves. There’s just one problem - collagen isn’t vegan. Because collagen is a protein containing a precise combination of amino acids, it can only be derived from animal sources.

So what’s the deal with all those plant-based collagen products? Spoiler alert: that’s not real collagen. Plant-based collagen promoters are usually made up of vitamin C. That’s because vitamin C is an antioxidant that can stimulate the body’s production of collagen. Vegan collagen products can act as promoters or builders of collagen within the body, but they can’t provide the real thing.

So while vegan collagen promoters can be effective, to an extent, they’re nowhere near as beneficial as the real deal. This is why we rely on all natural, animal-sourced collagen in our Lilium hydration supplements, to give your skin the best from within!
