The infamous Gua Sha therapy - is it worth the hype?

When I first saw the words gua sha, I was so confused. First I looked up how to pronounce it to ensure when I asked my friends about it I didn’t sound ridiculous, but then I wanted to know what the heck it was. So to quickly summarize, gua sha is a traditional healing method used for a variety of skin-healing purposes.

Now if you’re anything like me, before trying any new trend, I do a deep dive to see what all of the hype is about; and most importantly if it’s safe and actually is worth the hype.  Here’s what I found out. Spoiler alert…it works!

What is Gua Sha (gwah-shah)?

While it may seem like a new trend, gua sha has been around for a very long time.  It is an alternative therapy that is designed to improve circulation, which has been shown to decrease the symptoms of dry skin and eczema.

It involves scraping (with a soft tool) of the skin to stimulate circulation within the tissue. An oil is applied to the skin to ensure that the tool slides smoothly.  Gua sha can be applied anywhere from the arms and legs to the face.

The Benefits of Gua Sha

Do you ever have those mornings when you wake up and just feel ‘meh’? Maybe you had a long workday or ate too many curly fries (me every Wednesday night).  Then trust me, gua sha is a game changer!  I use mine for 3-5 minutes two times a week and it looks like I had plastic surgery.  It almost seems fake! The first time I tried it I thought my mirror was a Snapchat filter.  To put it in more scientific terms, not only may gua sha relieve the symptoms associated with migraines and neck pain, but it also:

  • Decreases puffiness
  • Reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines
  • Brightens skin’s complexion
  • Offers many more amazing benefits

How to Use a Gua Sha

First, you’ll need to purchase a gua sha if you don’t have one already. You can find them online or in most beauty stores easily these days.  Then, apply an oil or serum to your face to ensure the gua sha slides smoothly. Psst… if you’re looking for a more refreshing treatment, put your gua sha in the freezer!

I love using Lotus as a face serum! It is so hydrating and helps fight dry skin and irritations! Try applying it both before and after treatment for maximum effectiveness.  Apply even pressured strokes across your face in the direction of lymphatic flow for 3-5 minutes.  If you’re pressed for time, no worries! you can do just a couple of strokes on each side. This will push lymph into your body’s natural drainage system decreasing puffiness and improving your complexion.

How Often Should You Use Your Gua Sha?

It is recommended that you perform this once a week but talk to a professional regarding what frequency is best for your skin type.

The Bottom Line

Gua sha is an amazing natural option for those looking to eliminate fine lines, puffiness, dark circles, and more.  It is easy to perform and will give you visible results after the first use!

And since gua sha is amazing for improving circulation, it can also help combat dry skin and irritations.  Pairing gua sha with an amazing moisturizer such as Rosa, will help combat symptoms of dry skin and leave you with a glowing, dewy texture!
