Top Tips for Glowing, Hydrated Skin all Summer Long

Summer has finally arrived! This means the return of barbecues, laying by the pool, and plenty of time in the sun. However, summer can be a particularly difficult time to maintain healthy, hydrated skin. This is due in large part to increased sun exposure as well as higher levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Researchers have linked these factors to premature wrinkles, sagging, age spots, and skin cancer, among other risks. Here are our top five essential tips for avoiding skin damage and maintaining healthy-looking skin all summer long:ย

SPF, SPF, and More SPFย

The importance of sunscreen, and all other SPF products, cannot be overstated. SPF, short for โ€œsun protection factorโ€, measures the amount of UV radiation necessary to harm protected skin, relative to unprotected skin. In essence, SPF provides an indication of how long your skin will take to redden with sunscreen compared to bare, unprotected skin. So SPF 30 means you have 30 extra minutes before you start to burn.

Always remember to apply sunscreen. Sunscreen is one of the most essential sun protectants around. Each sunscreen product contains SPF, but the values of protection can vary. A sunscreen with a higher SPF offers greater protection against sunburns. In addition to a high SPF, we recommend sunscreen products labeled โ€œBroad Spectrumโ€ for maximum sun protection because they shield the skin from both UVA and UVB radiation. UVA radiation is associated with skin aging and UVB rays are responsible for producing sunburns.ย

Switch to moisturizer and makeup with SPF. For added protection, it helps to purchase makeup and moisturizers with SPF. These products can help to prevent sun damage throughout the day, particularly on your face. However, it's important to remember that these products alone do not protect as well as a high SPF sunscreen, so we still recommend applying regular sunscreen underneath your makeup every day, regardless of if you plan to spend a lot of time outdoors.

Use Aloe Vera

If youโ€™re looking to soothe a sunburn, aloe vera works like a charm. Aloe vera possesses anti-inflammatory properties that hydrate the skin as well as reduce irritation and redness. It can also help to enhance collagen production which speeds up the skinโ€™s natural healing process. In fact, itโ€™s so beneficial, we made sure to include it in all our topical hydration products!

Take Skin-Care Vitamins Dailyย

One of the best ways to give your skin a little extra love in the hot summer months is by taking vitamins. A number of vitamins have been found to enhance skin health and help to hydrate from the inside out. Vitamin A has anti-inflammatory properties that help to lessen the skinโ€™s sensitivity to the sun. Vitamin E can help to decrease inflammation from sunburn. Zinc is another powerful anti-inflammatory that aids in healing damage resulting from sunburn. All of which can be found in our all-natural daily hydration supplement, Lilium!ย

Don't Forget to Moisturizeย

There is a common misconception that moisturizers are only important for dry, winter months, but this is actually not the case! While summer may be humid, it's important to remember to moisturize regularly. Intense summer heat can strip the skin of its natural oils, leaving your skin feeling dry and dehydrated. Quality moisturizers enhance skin hydration by delaying water loss from the skinโ€™s surface. Oil-based moisturizers, in particular, help to lock in moisture and protect the skin from the harsh summer sun. For an extra boost of hydration, we recommend mixing a few droplets of our Lotus hydrating oil into some of our daily moisturizer, Rosa, before applying it to your skin!ย
